Beltane Soy Wax Candle – Rose & Jasmine Natural Candle for May Day

The Beltane Soy Wax Candle is a hand-poured natural soy candle scented with real essential oils of rose, jasmine, clary sage, and frankincense. Our tribute to Beltane, the Celtic fire festival that marks the start of summer on May 1st every year.

There's a moment in early May when the cold finally lets go. The hedges begin to flower, the bees return from their slumber, and the scent of nature seems to bloom forward. This the feeling which we wish to invoke: Lush rose and sultry jasmine carry the bloom of the first flowers, while clary sage adds a calm, herbal clearing, and frankincense grounds the blend with a resinous warmth, like the ghost of a bonfire.

Our Beltane soy wax candle makes a genuinely thoughtful Beltane gift or May Day gift, but you don't need a holiday to burn it. It's a rose and jasmine candle for anyone who wants spring to last a little longer.

What Is Beltane?

For thousands of years, May 1st has marked Beltane on the Gaelic calendar. This ancient fertility festival celebrates the arrival of summer and the bounty of the land: the flowers are in bloom, the forests and hills are teeming with newborn life, and the crops are growing. After long months of cold, the land is once again alive.

If there is any one practice related to Beltane, it's the bonfire. Beltane, alongside Imbolc, Lughnasadh, and Samhain, form the Fire Festivals, half of the ancient Wheel of the Year solar calendar. The other half is the Sabbaths, or the High Holidays, on the Solstices and Equinoxes. Each of these ancient celebrations marks the passing of time, always with a cleansing rite of fire.

Yet for Beltane, fire is more than symbolic. Landing as it does on May Day, this ancient holiday is an important moment on the Celtic calendar, when the balance tips from darkness to light as the Sun slowly moves towards its zenith overhead. Bonfires were lit in honor of the Sun, seen as a protective father figure, to ask for protection as crops and herds began to grow in the warm Spring weather.

FAQ

  • What does the Beltane candle smell like? Primarily rose and jasmine, softened by herbal clary sage and warm frankincense. Floral and fresh rather than sweet.
  • Is this a good Beltane or May Day gift? Yes, it's named for and scented around the Beltane festival (May 1), making it a natural seasonal gift.
  • Is the candle natural? Yes. It's made with 100% soy wax and an eco-cotton wick, with no parabens, phthalates, or plastics.
  • How long does it burn? About 20-25 hours for 3oz tins, 40-50 hours for amber 7oz amber jars. Trim the wick to 1/4" before each lighting for the cleanest burn and burn for a mininum of 30 minutes (preferably a full hour) to allow the wax pool at the top of the candle to form evenly.
