What is Imbolc?

The next Imbolc falls on Sunday, February 1, 2026.

In the ancient Gaelic calendar, Imbolc marks the very first day of Spring—a time of renewal, cleansing, and the return of light after the long winter. This sacred festival honors Brigid, the Celtic goddess of poetry, healing, and the hearth, whose spirit embodies both creativity and rebirth. Traditionally, Imbolc was celebrated with the lighting of candles, the blessing of homes, and offerings left in honor of Brigid to invite her protection and inspiration for the year ahead.

Imbolc continues to shine in modern times as Saint Brigid’s Day, or Lá Fhéile Bríde in Irish. In 2023, it was officially recognized as a public holiday in Ireland, celebrating both the goddess and the beloved saint who share her name. Today, many honor Imbolc by welcoming the first signs of Spring: burning candles, crafting Brigid’s crosses, and filling their homes with fresh flowers and fragrant, natural scents that evoke renewal and warmth.
